Frequently Asked Question

Do I work for Lone Star Senior Care?

No. You are an independent contractor, not an employee. We match you with families, but you set your own hours, rates, and make your own agreements with the client.

What documents do I need to apply?

• Valid CNA license (required)

• CPR certification (recommended)

• Government-issued ID

• Completed W-9 form

• Proof of professional liability insurance

• Two references

• Background check authorization

Do I need to get an EIN (Employer Identification Number)?

Recommended but not required.

• You can use your Social Security Number to file taxes.

But an EIN is free and helps keep your personal SSN private when invoicing or working with clients.

• Apply online at: irs.gov/ein

Do I need to register a business or get a DBA (Doing Business As)?

Optional.

If you want to operate under a name like “Caring Hands by Maria,” a DBA is needed.

• In Texas, this can cost around $15–$25, filed through the county clerk’s office.

• Not required if you just operate under your own name.

Do I have to pay anything to be listed with LSSC?

No upfront cost.

• You can join the roster and get matched for free.

• After your first match, you can choose a monthly plan for more access and visibility:

○ Basic: $25/month

○ Premium: $75/month

○ (includes background check and unlimited gigs)

○ [No match, no pressure.]

What kind of insurance do I need?

Professional liability insurance.

• Protects you if there is ever a claim of injury, negligence, or mistake during your caregiving.

• Costs: Typically $80–$150/year depending on coverage.

• We’ll give you recommendations or referrals to affordable options.

How do taxes work as an independent contractor?

• You are self-employed, so no taxes are withheld from your payments.

• You are responsible for reporting your income and paying:

○ Self-employment tax

○ Federal income tax

• You’ll use the W-9 form to report income and may receive a 1099 form if you earn $600+ from any client.

Tip: Consider a bookkeeping app or speak with a tax preparer before tax season.

How do I get paid?

• Directly by your clients—we don’t touch your money.

• Common methods: Zelle, Venmo, PayPal, cash, or check.

• You and the client agree on payment method and schedule (weekly, bi-weekly, etc.).

Can I choose my own hours and clients?

Yes. You choose which opportunities you accept.

We simply connect you with clients based on:

• Your availability

• Language/cultural preferences

• Location

• Skill set (e.g. dementia care)

What kind of support do I get?

• Help setting up your caregiver profile

• Background check and onboarding guidance

• Templates for client agreements and invoices

• Mediation support if there’s a dispute with a client

• Opportunities for profile boosts and testimonials

What’s this about a caregiver intro video?

We encourage you to record a short 30–60 second video introducing yourself:

• Say your name, experience, and what kind of care you love to provide.

• Helps clients feel confident before meeting you.

• It’s optional—but it boosts your chances of getting matched faster.

What happens if something goes wrong with a client or payment?

• You are in control, but if a dispute arises, we can offer basic mediation.

• We do not act as a collection agency.

• We’re here to help guide and support you in setting professional boundaries and managing expectations.

Do I need experience to join?

No. Many of our caregivers are newly certified. What matters most is professionalism, reliability, and willingness to learn.

What happens if I need help with technology (e.g., Zoom interview, submitting forms)?

We’ve got you. We offer tech support if you get stuck with video uploads, forms, or client communication.

What kind of caregiving tasks are expected?

• Companionship

• Help with bathing, dressing, grooming

• Meal prep

• Medication reminders

• Transportation (if offered by you)
